
Using your third age to the full
The u3a is a self-help, participative organisation with the purpose of providing leisure
and learning opportunities for those not in full time employment, which is the only criteria for membership.
Activities are usually on weekdays in the mornings or afternoons and are organised by the members for the members
using their knowledge and skills. If you would like an activity that is not available,
you are free to start a group and advice is available to help you.
What you get for your Membership
- Monthly meeting from September to June with speakers (musical entertainment in December)
- Regular newsletter
- Participation in any of the 145 plus activity groups
- subject to space; if an activity is oversubscribed help to start a new group for that activity or a new activity
- Activities cover areas such as languages, history, literature, science, music, crafts, games, sports and dancing
- Groups vary in their meeting frequency, from every week to once a month - the average is 20 meetings a year
- The venue cost for some groups is very expensise and these groups may require subscription supplements in addition to the standard subscription
- Copyright licence to copy information for use in your u3a activity
- Access to equipment such as laptops, projectors, sound and video systems to help with your group
- Appropriate insurance to cover group activities
- Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) for any mains electrical personal equipment that you use in your u3a group activities
- this verifies that the equipment is safe, at the time of testing, to use connected to the mains.
- Access to organised regional and national study days (extra cost)
- Access to online courses from £10 (untutored) to £15 (tutored)
- Special offers for some products e.g. free entry to English Heritage sites for u3a groups>
All this for less than 70p a week - £35 a year
